The publishing grant will be used to produce a new title in Afterall’s One Work series on Korean artist Sung Hwan Kim’s A Record of Drifting Across the Sea (2017–): a large multi-part research project focusing on undocumented Korean immigrant histories in the US at the turn of the twentieth century. The work offers a perfect case study to discuss the open-endedness of research-based art practices, and to address pressing issues of borders and migration, as well as ecological catastrophes and settler colonialism in the Hawai’i, a point of passage for most immigrants crossing the Pacific.
