BIO
I am a resigner, researcher and lecturer. I am the recipient of a Wellcome EC Research Award grant, leading research project Maternal Machines: Design Speculations about Fantasies of Care. My research will use speculative design approaches to interrogate, imagine, identify and visualise design scenarios and opportunities with AI and emergent technologies in experiences related to maternal and infant care. Utilising the design practices of drawing, multidisciplinary collaboration, speculative design ideation and affected users’ participation, this research will explore ideated situations and design opportunities around emergent technologies to support wellbeing in maternal and infant care.
I am interested in our ambivalent and complex relationship with technology in daily life. My PhD explored the role of smartphones for mothers and young children, where I designed a series of experimental, semi-functional artefacts that I used to investigate experiences using the smartphone during the childrearing task, and more generally, ambivalent attitudes towards technology in family life.
I was research associate in the EPSRC funded project Family Rituals 2.0 project, a multidisciplinary collaboration between the Royal College of Art’s Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design and Newcastle University. The project investigated the role of rituals in families that experience regular separation due to work travel, and the possibilities for digital technologies to interpret them.
My experience ranges from toy and interactive design to products and furniture. I have a keen interest in innovation and creativity in everyday life behaviour.
I worked as a Designer for Sekisui Design Centre in Japan and as a Senior Designer for LEGO in Denmark. In London I worked with Conran & Partners, Brand Environment and SPD. I have designed a range of product concepts for Mothercare and a series of rugs for the Danish firm Linie Design.
I lecture in industrial design at University of the Arts London: Central Saint Martins.
