BIO

Dr Hall's research focuses on mapping and visualization as critical and participatory practices. His recent book Critical Visualization: Rethinking the Representation of Data (Bloomsbury Academic 2022) co-authored with Dr Patricio Davila, presents a critical framework for understanding and making data visualization. Dr Hall is the UAL lead on Envirology: Climate Truth Crisis, a pan-European educational collaboration between 7 art and design colleges to look into the issue of climate disinformation and its impact on democracy, funded by the Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership Programme. He was also UAL lead on Plastic Justice, an Erasmus + Special Partnership Project exploring micro-plastics pollution and how design might disseminate new knowledge and awareness of the issues and possible responses. Hall's recent essays include Digital Security Narratives in the Time of COVID-19: A Case for Kindness (2022), co-authored with Prof Lizzie Coles-Kemp in the book Perspectives on Design and Digital Communication III, Springer Series in Design and Innovation. 

Dr Hall was previously Course Leader, BA Graphic Commication Design at Central Saint Martins (2015-2021), Programme Director of BA Design and Design Futures at Griffith University Queensland College of Art in Australia (2012-15), Senior Lecturer in Design at the University of Texas at Austin, USA (2007-12), and Lecturer in Graphic Design at Yale School of Art, USA (2000-2007). His essays appear in the books Design in the Borderlands (Routledge 2014), Graphic Design Reader (Bloomsbury Academic 2018) and Encountering Things: Design and Theories of Things (Bloomsbury Academic 2017). His books include Else/Where: Mapping - New Cartographies of Networks and Territories (edited with Janet Abrams, 2006). He is co-founder of DesignInquiry, a non-profit educational organization devoted to researching design issues in intensive team-based gatherings, based in Maine, USA
